This book will cover the sound reproduction techniques for emerging consumer applications for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). With the advent of VR and AR headgears in recent years, it opens up many opportunities to integrate binaural audio into these headgears to create a truly immersive virtual and augmented experience. To render an immersive binaural audio over headphones, binaural signal processing techniques are crucial for its successful implementation.
The book will be arranged into 3 parts to cover the main elements of the topic. Part 1: Introduction and Background on Binaural Audio covering perception, measurements, as well as objective and subjective quality (attribute) assessment. References are provided to standards and evaluation metrics. Part II: Digital Signal Processing Techniques for Binaural Rendering will include material on playback devices with head-tracking. And finally, Part III: Implementation and Applications of Binaural Audio will discuss the practical implementations and code is provided for building prototypes working in real-time. The book will be supplemented by a companion website hosting MATLAB scripts, functions, examples, and demos to illustrate how key binaural signal processing algorithms and applications are carried out.
