A Companion to American Studies offers a variety of approaches to the new American Studies, including its relations to allied fields such as Ethnic, Gender, Cultural, Postcolonial, and Media Studies. The volume is divided into four parts: Foundations and Backgrounds; Ethnic Studies and American Studies; The New American Studies; and Problems and Issues. Combining historical essays with theoretical and polemical issues, this companion is designed to provoke discussion and help students and scholars at all levels develop their own approaches to the diverse areas included in contemporary American Studies.
