Child and Adolescent Health is an optimal introduction to the health education profession, providing a broad introduction to successful health promotion, programs, services and collaborations to reduce health risks and promote school success. Each chapter will also include service-learning activities to extend student learning and community engagement.

Part one covers foundations of health and learning. Chapter topics are the critical position of health to academic achievement; working with schools, health organizations, and communities; and effective health promotion programs and services. Among key topics covered in these chapters are social determinants of health, the socio-econological model, how to advocate for child health, working with stakeholders, team-building, and evidence-based planning and program management.

In part two, the book focuses on specific approaches to promoting health in children and adolescents. Chapter topics are behavioral and mental health; physical health; essentials of health education; nutritional health; physical education; and healthy environment. Each chapter covers history, national standards, essential functions, state of practice, and case examples of effective programs and practices.

Chapters in part 3 cover health needs between childhood and young adulthood. Chapter topics are preschool, elementary school, middle school, high school, and college. Each chapter covers health behaviors/health challenges; prevention of chronic disease; special health needs; family engagement strategies; disparities and equity; teaching strategies and evidence-based programs; technology; and advocacy.
