This book introduces both engineering students and practicing engineers to the science of quantum mechanics. The text provides a practical guide to the topics of greatest technological importance that require an understanding of quantum mechanics.
Split into two parts the book first provides a fundamental understanding of quantum mechanical principles and phenomena. The second part describes device and system technologies being used or developed today that exploit quantum mechanical principles for their operation such as Quantum Computing, Laser Technology, Scanning probe microscopy, Optics, and Nanoelectronics. Part I points to some of the devices or systems where the principles described and explained in a particular chapter are used in a device or a system. The device or system technologies and applications are then described in much more detail in Part II.
