The aim of the title is to provide both a practical illustrated guide to the diagnosis, treatment and management of orthopaedic conditions within primary care and also guidance on when and how to refer.
The title begins with the history and examination, investigation and initial management of common orthopaedic presentations of the spine, shoulder/elbow, wrist/hand, hip, knee, foot and ankle. Each of these chapters will be cross referenced to the common investigations and skills described in the orthopaedic investigations, procedures and emergencies chapters.
The title will then cover common childhood conditions before addressing rheumatological disorders. There will be detailed coverage of osteoarthritis and trauma, and chapters on infection, tumours, and metabolic conditions such as osteoporosis and Paget’s disease. The orthopaedic emergencies, investigations and procedures chapters will provide more detailed information on techniques, procedures, imaging methods, tests, what to look out for, and red and yellow flags.
A chapter on post-operative care will address recovery programmes, possible complications and the various roles of the multidisciplinary team in caring for the post-operative patient. The concluding chapter will provide a brief overview of the likely future developments within the field and suggested further reading.
The title will include current NICE guidelines and the RCGP curriculum guidance throughout and also aim, where possible, to address an international audience and common orthopaedic presentations encountered in resource poor settings.
As for all ABC series titles, it will be generously illustrated throughout with appropriate photographs, scans, images and line drawings. Each chapter will begin with a summary overview section and end with suggested further reading
