The first book to present new and emergent materials and methods alongside traditional construction materials, this book will serve to educate the next generation of engineers, architects and constructors. Beginning with an overview of materials engineering and the traditional building materials (soil, concrete, cement, asphalt, wood, steel, masonry, etc.) the book then continues with an introduction to green and sustainable materials, new applications of nanotechnology to construction materials, materials designed for security and safety applications, new generation composites and emergent IT and health monitoring technology. By fully integrating the traditional and new in one book, the authors will be able to draw a continuum between the materials and methods presented and avoid the trap of presenting the new materials as untested or rarefied. Fully integrated laboratory tests and worked examples in each chapter will further connect the materials with their analytical methods, and an accompanying CD with full color photos and diagrams documenting each test will serve as a virtual lab should time constraints make it impractical to devote lab time to each test.
